Quick answer

If you need fuel money as soon as you’re loaded, OTR Solutions is the only factor we found that publishes both the size (up to 50% of linehaul) and the fee ($15 to its fuel card, $24 by Comchek) source. FactorLoads states the widest range, 40%–60% at pickup source. If you don’t factor, C.H. Robinson and Werner advance fuel on their own loads.

Key takeaways

  • Published fuel advances run 40%–60% of the load, paid at pickup, and come out of your final payment.
  • Only OTR (factor) and Werner (broker) publish a per-advance fee: $15–$24 and $10.
  • You almost always need the rate confirmation and a signed BOL showing you are loaded.
  • Bobtail and RTS offer fuel cards or credit lines, not a per-load advance, on the pages we read.

Advance on load from the broker instead

If you don’t want a factoring account, some brokers advance fuel on their own freight. These are published on the broker’s own carrier page:

Who doesn’t offer a per-load fuel advance

On the pages we read, RTS offers a fuel card credit line of up to $3,200 per truck per week rather than a per-load advance source, and Bobtail offers a fleet card. TAFS markets fuel help, but its own pages didn’t describe a per-load fuel advance, so we left it out until we can verify one.

How to get a fuel advance on a load

  1. Be set up with the factor and have the broker approved (credit-checked) before you book.
  2. Get the signed rate confirmation.
  3. Once loaded, send the rate con and the signed BOL (Triumph, Phoenix and others ask for both).
  4. Pick how you get it: fuel card is usually cheapest; Comchek or a money code works at the pump.
  5. The advance plus any fee comes out when the invoice is funded.

Each fuel-advance factor, in detail

1. OTR Solutions

Published advance fees

OTR says advances pay up to 50% of the linehaul before the load delivers, for fuel and other trip costs, and the amount comes off your final payment. Its fee schedule is public: $15 when the advance goes to the OTR Fuel Card, $24 when it is issued by Comchek. It also offers lumper advances.

Watch for: Once you factor a broker with OTR, later invoices from that broker must be factored until released.

2. Triumph

Fast approval

Triumph says you request a fuel advance by sending the rate confirmation and bill of lading, and once approved the money can arrive in as fast as one hour. It describes month-to-month factoring with no long-term contract.

Watch for: The advance percentage and fee are not published on the page we read. Ask for both.

3. Cashway Funding

Free enrollment

Cashway says factoring clients can enroll in its Emergency Fuel Advance program for free and collect a 50% advance as soon as they pick up an approved load.

Watch for: Program terms and conditions apply, and the per-advance fee is not listed on the page.

4. FactorLoads

Biggest stated range

FactorLoads says it advances 40% to 60% of the load when you pick it up, with no contracts, spot factoring, no monthly minimums and recourse or non-recourse programs.

Watch for: The page does not list a per-advance fee or factoring rate.

5. Phoenix Capital Group

Month-to-month

Phoenix says it gives fuel advances once the truck is loaded: you send the rate confirmation and bill of lading, and it transfers funds after verifying with your customer. Its typical agreement is month-to-month.

Watch for: No advance percentage is published. Funding-method fees (wire, ACH, fuel card) are extra.

6. Factoring Express

Same-day advances

Factoring Express advertises same-day fuel advances of up to 50% of the delivery value, approved on your receivables rather than your credit score.

Watch for: Not available if you are leased to another carrier, since the load must be on your own MC number.

Frequently asked questions

What is an advance on load payment?

It is part of the load’s pay sent to you after pickup, before delivery, usually for fuel. The factor or broker takes it back out of the final payment. OTR, for example, pays up to 50% of the linehaul before the load delivers and deducts it from your final settlement.

How much of the load can I get as a fuel advance?

Published figures run 40% to 60%. OTR, Cashway and Factoring Express say up to or about 50%. FactorLoads says 40% to 60%. C.H. Robinson says up to 60% on its own loads, and Werner pays 40% at pickup confirmation.

What does a fuel advance cost?

Few companies publish it. OTR charges $15 if the advance goes to its fuel card and $24 by Comchek. Werner charges $10 per cash advance on its own loads. Others did not list a fee, so ask for it in writing.

Can I get a fuel advance with a new MC or bad credit?

Factoring Express says approval is based on your receivables, not a strong credit score. Its program does not work if you are leased to another carrier, because the load must be under your own MC.

Do I need to factor to get a fuel advance?

Not always. Some brokers advance fuel on their own loads: C.H. Robinson offers up to 60% after pickup and Werner pays 40% by money code for a $10 fee. Factoring companies generally require you to be a factoring client.
